“Travel early and travel often. Live abroad, if you can. Understand cultures other than your own. As your understanding of other cultures increases, your understanding of yourself and your own culture will increase exponentially.” ~ Tom Freston
I’m a huge proponent of travelling – it’s not only fun and exciting and a break from one’s daily routine (though all those things are true too), it’s also educational, mind-opening and opinion-changing! Travelling can be transformative and the more of it a person is able to do, especially in their formative years, the better!
If you are lucky enough to be able to travel (whether early and often or late and occasionally), or to be able to live abroad for a while, then seize that opportunity with both hands and be thankful for it. And enjoy every moment! The insight and development of who you are, of your values and opinions, of your understanding and empathy for other cultures and your own, will grow and grow and grow!
This photograph is from a recent visit to Portugal’s Alentejo region. The beautiful buildings are the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa, for centuries, the seat of House of Braganza, one of the most important noble houses in Portugal. On a sunny day, the blue sky makes the red tile roof and marble facade positively glow!

I agree, there are a lot things you discover about yourself and your life when you travel out. If you travel often enough, the discoveries are quicker and they all make you into a better person. Well said Kavita.
Thanks Ami!
This is such an inspiring quote, Kavey! I couldn’t agree more with everything stated in this quote!
Glad you feel the same way Agness!
I love everything about this quote, especially understanding other cultures. The more I travel, the more I’m exposed to how other ways of life are for people in the world. Traveling early and often is also important since you’ll get exposed to the world sooner, which shapes your view of life for the better.
So glad you love it too, and yes I think travelling early really helps to shape one’s outlook to the world!
These are definitely words to live by in my life.
Indeed!
Words to live by! I totally agree that travel has a way of shaping your perception of both self and the world around you, and your place in the world around you. And we are more open to new ideas while we’re young, so I think that travel while you’re young is key to allowing your experiences to have maximum impact on shaping your personality.
Absolutely, there’s a realisation that our way is not the only way, may not always be the best way, and that there’s often so much to learn from the ways of others… understanding that lesson young can only be a good thing!
Couldn’t agree more. There is no better way of opening up your mind, being more receptive to others and less judgmental of others than to travel far and wide, experience diversity. And living abroad, something that I am doing already, especially in a place like Dubai, which is a melting pot of cultures from around the world, is the best experience I could ever have asked for.
Yes, particularly that aspect of being less judgemental to others, which I think is so important in our global era.
I love this! I’ve heard it before but didn’t know who said it. Travel makes the world a better place.
It truly does!
I lived abroad as an au-pair when I was nineteen and it definitely changed me. It made me more resilient, confident and also firmly ensconced the travel bug! Been travelling regularly since
I was a teenage au pair too, in France. I think I was 19 or so too!
Beautiful thoughts. If anyone could travel at least once in their lifetime, I think the world would be a better place where people look more after each other. Maybe we’d better take care of the others and of the planet.
I think it would help us create the bridges between our many societies more readily!
What a beautiful quote. And you’re so very right that travel is more than just a simple change in routine. It’s also an amazing opportunity to make each moment an opportunity to learn.
Yes! I love that change in routine aspect, but the learning and the exposure to other cultures is a huge huge part of it.
I wish more people would travel. I also wish they would do more to get off the beaten path. There is so much to see and learn about the world and I feel like so many people never get out of the tourist zone.
I think it can depend… for example Tokyo and Kyoto are very firmly on the tourist zone in Japan but if people went to Japan and visited nowhere but those two cities, I think they would still be richer for it, they would still come away with an understanding of Japanese culture, Japanese people, history, art and so on… I’ve seen some of Japan off-the-beaten path too, but I think the tourist zone places have value too, often they are popular for a good reason!
This quote is honestly my life mantra now! I left a terrible and all consuming job almost two years ago so I could expand my horizons and travel more and live my life. For the past two years I’ve done that and really expanded my mind and understanding of myself and the world. Thanks for sharing!
