Travel Quote Tuesday | Jonathan Winters

I’m a believer in the adage that you have to make your own fortune.

Of course, luck plays a huge part, as do the circumstances you are born into, not to mention the opportunities that you have access to. I am not so daft that I don’t realise how much easier it is for some than it is for others; I appreciate that some people coast through a life full of ease where others are born into poverty, hardship and graft.

But at the same time, we each play a part in the direction of our own lives. The choices we make, and what we do, are down to each of us. I’m sure we have all encountered in our lives two people have similar backgrounds, opportunities in life, skills and attributes… yet one of them never strives to improve or change their situation, often bemoans the hand he’s been dealt, and plods through life as though he had no means to shape it, the other expends all the energy (and hard work) needed to change what he can change, actively chasing what he wants even when that means opening himself up to the risk of failure or ridicule… and, whilst everything may not happen just as he wishes it, he directs his own fate to a greater degree.

Sometimes we are lucky, and it’s a warm sunny day as the ship docks to the harbour right at our feet… all we need do is take a tiny step forward and there we are, safely on deck.

Other times, we have to swim for miles out to sea through a howling gale to finally clamber onboard, cold, wet and half-drowned… but we made it onto the damn ship!

This pretty harbour is in Iceland, a country with so much natural beauty it’s hard to describe without resorting to the most hackneyed of clichés!

Simple but a very useful quote…
It is obvious but sometimes people don’t seem to do the obvious and get stuck.
BTW the place in the photo that goes with the quote also looks great.

I totally agree that we each play a part in the direction of our own lives. I think that circumstances and life definitely have a way of affecting our luck, but they are mere obstacles to the fate we desire – which is ours to navigate.

A wonderful and deep quote –
As per me, I would say that everyone of one of has a choice to make, and the choices we make moves us in the direction. Any circumstance, good or bad always has some sort of a choice that eventually reaps the result accordingly.
Luck does play a part but I still believe that “luck” is making the right choice at the right time.
Hope it makes some sort of sense.
For a second there, I thought the picture was of Ireland 🙂

Great quote! You shouldn’t sit and wait for stuff to come to you. If you put in the hard work, you will get the results. I love the picture, quite fitting 🙂
