“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ~ Confucius
Surely one of the most famous of Confucius‘ sayings, this is a metaphor for life. When an undertaking seems daunting, impossible, overwhelming… breaking it down into small steps makes it easier to start. You just have to take the first one, it’s small and easy and not too scary… and then the next and the next after that… and before too long, you’re half way there! A few steps more and the end is in sight… and suddenly, you’ve done it!
I’m very much a step by step planner, breaking big projects down into distinct and achievable tasks, so this quote really resonates with me!
This pretty staircase is in Monzaraz, a stunningly beautiful hilltop town in Portugal’s Alentejo region, with white-washed buildings and cobbled lanes.

It’s a classic.. but there’s a good reason why! It’s so true, and helpful too..
Exactly, thanks Aaron!
This quote resonates true with me too. I remember the days as a student when studying Physics theories that ran into pages, I used to mental break it up into small portions and do one at a time and finally, the entire piece would be ready. This is the best way, step by step and once you reach the top you yourself will marvel at the height that you have climbed.
Yeah, it really helps put your concentration on the parts of the whole, rather than being daunted by the entirety, and suddenly it’s all done!
One of my favorite quotes when I’m facing a huge task that overwhelms me. I try to break things down into smaller groups so they become more manageable… It’s a good way to live.
Totally agree!
I love this quote! It sits well with me. With every adventure, it always starts with the first step! I have pinned this post!
Thanks Marquita, glad it resonates!
I, too, love this Confucius quote, and like Sandy, try to break large projects into small ones to make them more manageable.
It definitely helps one focus on the doing!
We, Greeks, say something similar… H αρχή είναι το ήμισυ του παντός = The beginning/start is already the half of the entire way! Love both, thanks for sharing!
This is so true!! I am trying to lose weight/journey and the hardest step/workout is the first one!!
Yes, whatever the goal, it’s hard to take the first step, but breaking it down is a great motivator.
That’s such a cool picture of the staircase! Looks so aesthetic .
Thanks Eli, it was one of those little details we walked past and I just had to pause!
I love the quote and the picture. So true, it starts with a single step.
This approach helps in work and in personal life. Break down into small manageable pieces, and voila, things dont look undoable anymore.
A lovely quote, one of my favourites. Did you like Monsaraz? It’s a very cute little place.
Loved it! There’s a bit more about it in my post about Alentejo!❤️
It’s a classic and something I apply in my everyday life. So simple yet so inspiring
One of my faves quotes all time, but right now I’m loving this white-washed building. Such a pretty staircase, just feeling to go to the top, hehe
This is my favourite motivational quote. That very first step we take is important and the most difficult one. And then with each step we come closer to our goal. I’m a step by step planner too and I’m glad you shared this quote – a reminder of the importance of each small step. Very inspiring! 🙂
That’s a famous quote most of us grew up with. I loved the poster you made with the quote. Whenever I am feeling demotivated to embark upon a long trip, I chant this mantra to me. All it takes is one step. Everything else falls into place.
