Travel Quote Tuesday | Special Sunsets

“Every one of a hundred thousand cities around the world had its own special sunset, and it was worth going there, just once, if only to see the sun go down.” ~ Ryū Murakami

This quote is from Ryū Murakami’s novel Coin Locker Babies. Murakami is a Japanese novelist and filmmaker known for his explorations of human nature.

I’ve heard people say that if you’ve seen one sunset, you’ve seen them all! That statement is utterly shocking to me! Even in a single place, every evening brings a new sunset… and while they may sometimes be similar, when atmospheric and weather conditions conspire, they can also be entirely different.

When you consider watching the sun set in different places all around the world, the variety of beauty to be enjoyed is surely infinite?

What’s your favourite place to watch the sun set?

I think my favorite sunset spot has to be Koh Phangan. But I’ve seen amazing ones also in India and in Berlin where I live. Most magical time of day for sure 🙂

Different places do have different sunsets although it sounds like the same. On the other hand, in my mountain travels I don’t always get a proper sunset as the sun hides quickly behind the peaks. However, the colours of the peaks at such times are worth the effort.

Love your quote! I’ve never really thought about it, but it does make every sunset at every place as unique as it can be. I think one of the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen was in Boracay years ago (when the island was a bit less touristy).

Love this one, and it is so true. Sunsets are beautiful everywhere but it is also true that the location and the time of year makes a different to the colors of the sun rays, at least to the color and way we see them. But a sunset is a sunset and it is always beautiful

Beautiful. I also love Murakami and his works. Sunsets are so beautiful and I agree that it’s different for every city.

I too don’t agree with this statement. Acc to me all sunsets are different even at the same place or at different place. My favourite ones are from Sri Lanka for sure

No two sunsets are the same. So, when you’ve seen one sunset you’ve seen one sunset. 😉

I have two favorite sunset places: a small island Siquijor in the Philippines and a town called Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia

I completely agree that no sunset looks the same! Watching sunsets is so relaxing in my opinion. The nicest I’ve ever seen was probably either Goa in India or Tonle Sap in Cambodia 🙂

I am feeling really homesick for San Diego today. I miss living next to the beach and walking down to see the sunset over the Pacific. We were really spoiled by some amazing sunsets for a while. The problem with traveling for a sunset is that each day is different. One of the best sunsets we saw on the road was in Indiana, which generally isn’t known for sunsets.

So true, isn’t it? Strange that I’ve never really thought about it. Sunsets in Calcutta are so different from the ones here in Corvallis. This quote brought an odd sense of calm to me…thank you.

Murakami is a smart cookie and a great writer. Of course every sunset is different – depending on the constellation of the clouds, the light, the pollution etc.
I’m going to Japan in September, so I will check out the one in Tokyo myself 😉

Lovely quote. Yes, every sunset is different, not only because of the way the sun’s rays hit at that particular time but the composition of the scene.

I love sunsets!! I don’t know if I have a favorite. I’ve seen sunsets in some pretty awesome places, but I’ve also seen some spectacular ones from my back porch!

I find the Japanese culture very interesting, and there’s always something new to learn. Yet I must say that being Italian my roots matter, so I’d say that my favorite place to watch the sunset is always my home in Naples!

I love that quote. What a great reason to travel. I have seen a lot of amazing sunsets. The sunsets here where I live in Colorado are spectacular with the Rocky Mountains in the background. I also love a sunset at sea. But, some of the best sunsets I have seen have been while on the plains in Kansas.

Sunsets are so different depending on where you are. Sunsets in dusty areas can have great red hues, and sunsets over the sea can have brilliant pinks and oranges. I think my favorite place to watch the sunset is wherever I am at!
