Travel Quote Tuesday | Roy Goodman

What style of travel makes you happy?

For me it’s travelling in reasonable comfort, staying in a great location for the destination, good weather (between 15 and 25 C – I don’t like it too hot) and plenty to see and do and learn and experience. I am happiest when travelling with Pete, though I do travel without him from time to time. I really like having time ahead of the trip to research and plan – although I seldom create an agenda for any given day, I do appreciate knowing the options available to me so I can decide based on my mood at the time. Eating well is hugely important – I love enjoying local specialities and eating out in posh restaurants, casual cafes, street food stalls, farmers markets and even picnics bought in a local grocery shop or food market and enjoyed overlooking some beautiful view. There’s no one kind of destination I seek out to the exclusion of all others – I love wildlife holidays in the wilderness, I love cultural city breaks and I love self-drives in rural regions with beautiful scenery.

What about you? What kind of travel makes you happy?

I too love a bit of comfort when I travel. For me though, it’s all about getting out of my comfort zone and exploring the more adventurous parts of the world. Sometimes comfort, good weather and tasty food don’t fit into that mix.

Yes, I agree with that! On some of our safaris and wildlife trips, we have still been able to stay in comfort and enjoy good food, even though the primary factor for choosing the camps has been the wildlife viewing, but other times we’ve stayed in some pretty basic places with meh food, or self-catering (and limited supplies) because it’s the only option for that place and the place is where we want to be!

I love a lot of comfort when l travel. I have a pretty big wardrobe considering but always travel with the same old outfits because they are comfy. Sunny weather is always desired without mugginess of course as that makes me just want to stay in :-).

We have developed the skill of travelling light, not as light as some but lighter than many! I’m not much into clothes or fashion (and don’t wear make up) so clothes choice is more about the weather and what we’ll need on a practical level (waterproofs for the Antarctic for example).

I can hardly better express what my travel style is than you just have. I probably sleep in cheaper places and I do have a flexible itinerary set. Of course I love the food but if there is too much to see I tend to skip food…which is terrible. Shame on me 🙂

I don’t think I’ve ever skipped food, though I’ll grudgingly ask to delay it where there’s a special sighting on a game drive or the like, and I don’t want to tear us away just to eat. But it has to be a pretty amazing thing to keep me from my food!!!

For me there has to be a bit of luxury when I travel! Basically I don´t want to do all the things I do at home, like cleaning, washing and making my bed! It might sound wrong, but there is just something about coming home to clean, fresh towels and a newly made bed after a long day of exploring 🙂 Also good food is important to me! I love to plan ahead so I can look forward to all the places, I am going to eat at (yes, I am a true foodie) Im not keen on travelling alone even though I have done it quite a few times! It is just more fun when you have someone to share the experiences 🙂

I do understand that feeling totally. A holiday is very much about exploring but that little treat of comfort and luxury can definitely be the icing on the cake! Totally with you on food, we plan around food too!

I like a mixture of travel. Comfort is great and all but sometimes I like the rough too. You get better travel stories that way 😉

That may be true, there are some amazing stories in my recent Travel Scares collaboration post!

I like to go places with lots to see and do, things that are different from home, places that challenge me to figure things out and adapt, beautiful scenery, good food, temperature above freezing (I really don’t like bitter cold) and enough variety to amuse me, hub and our son for the length of the trip. Travel is an adventure for me. And nice people. Nice, welcoming people can make any trip a million times better.
What I don’t require: luxury, 5 star restaurants, shopping.

I’m probably not dissimilar though I can cope better with extreme cold than extreme heat, as I can layer up against the cold but my body isn’t good with tolerating heat! We aren’t into shopping either, with the exception of food markets, flea markets and that kind of thing. Shopping is shops is rarely of interest. We tend to be more interested in regular restaurants and street food than in 5 star restaurants, though we’ll occasionally go higher end if there’s something really special to try. For accommodation, luxury is nice but location always always trumps it for us.

I’m a bit like you – I do like my comforts. I love researching a destination which helps you feel so much more at home when you get there! I do however love a hot holiday, plenty of rum and a good beach!!

I’m not really a beach babe at all, it’s just not my thing, but sometimes being pampered and staying somewhere luxurious is very nice!

I like group travel a lot because you have a lot of people around you all the time and it never gets lonely. But I’ve done a lot of solo travel too and the freedom I get from that is sooooooo worth it. I like to split my trip up between solo and group.

I’m very lucky to be married to my ideal travel companion so we rarely do group trips. I did a lot of them with my family as a kid, so I appreciate the advantages but these days the itineraries rarely match what I am looking for. I think they’re great for solo travellers who are gregarious and like to make friends and share experiences with others.

    Hi Kavita,

I do like nice places and nice things etc but I’m just a little bit obsessed with the outdoors which is why I usually favour my tent. In many cases this will mean taking wilderness trips which cost little money but this is absolutely not the reason – I do have money, I just find that I appreciate all the little things more when I take a camping trip full of simplicity 🙂

I am afraid that I’m too much attached to my need for a toilet I can access during the night without having to get dressed and exit my tent or room! I love safari camping but I would describe the tents in the camps I visit as way beyond glamping and into luxury camping!!!

Very thought provoking! I personally like slow food and slow travel and thoroughly enjoy spending lots of time outdoors too. I completely agree on the weather piece and having a reasonable amount of comfort.

Most travel makes me happy! My dream destinations all seem to be cold and wet, interestingly enough.

I can’t do freezing weather at all! I once traveled to Chile without thinking about the fact that it is in the south of the hemisphere and that my summer is winter there. I was so miserable! I got to learn how to ski at least…
I can do almost sort of travel styles, but camping hehehe. I like a mix of 5 stars with a sprinkle of hostels and airbnb because I get to experience different aspects of locals and it keeps my travel a bit interesting too.
