“Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.” ~ Sarah Kay
I love this quote by American poet Sarah Kayl it so evocatively describes the way that waves race to throw themselves onto the coastline in a continuous caress.
Travellers are often asked what kind of place they love the most – a city, the mountains, the forest or the sea. I’d usually answer ‘city’ to that question, as I so enjoy exploring cities around the world – the people, culture, architecture, history and cuisine are endlessly fascinating and wonderful!
But there’s something very calming about watching the ocean, whether it’s a brass band sea whipped into a fury of crashing cymbals as it pounds jagged rocks or the gentle babble of calm waters lapping onto a sandy beach.
Do you love the sea?
I took this photo of the sun lighting up turquoise waves as they crashed onto a beach in the Galapagos Islands. The volcanic rocks are dark and bare, creating a beautiful contrast to the blue-greens of the water.

I absolutely love this quote! I have to admit I have used it several times in my Instagram posts. I prefer cities just like you but I like the beach too – there’s indeed something very calming about watching the ocean.
It’s a very evocative one, isn’t it?
Oceans and beaches are my favourite and the quote is beautifully penned down. I prefer the calmness of the ocean then the large waves. Woukd love to retire by the ocean.
I understand, though if I’m safe and warm inside a seaside building, then watching the huge waves crash ashore can be enjoyable too!
I kept rereading the quote. I love it. I like how she came with the quote by watching the reality of the ocean and the shoreline. Next time I go to the sea, I will remember your post and this quote from Sarah Kay.
Glad you enjoyed!
Great quote! I also love the beach as it the ocean seems endless and mysterious! Though I wouldn’t say no to exploring a city at times too as the energy can be invigorating!
I love watching the sea but can’t spend as much time there without getting bored as I can in a city, usually!
What a lovely quote. I love the sea – beaches are my favorite destination. I like laying in the beach and feeling the serenity of the sun beaming down, the crash of the waves and the sound of the seagulls. I also enjoy staying in hotels where you can leave a window open as the ocean lulls you to sleep.
That’s a lovely image, of falling asleep to the sound of the ocean!
I actually don’t have very many seas where I’m from, tons of legs though! I love the photos that you’ve posted, the dynamic of all the waves crashing is incredible! I visited the North Sea and it was kind of angry like in these photos only it was covered in foam at the beach. It was pretty gross
I’m not sure what you mean by legs, could it be lakes? It is amazing watching waves crash ashore and yes, the North Sea can often be far angrier than this pretty beach!
That’s such a lovely photo, and what a great destination to capture it! I too love being by the water, there’s definitely something calming about it. When we’re in Italy, Sicily, I always take some time to sit by myself and just watch the water. It’s one of my favourite things to do!
Thank you! Taking some time out to sit and watch the sea sounds perfect!
I love beaches and travel quotes. I also love making poems. My favourite travel quote was “Two roads diverged in a road and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference”.
That’s one of my all time favourites too!
What a romantic quote! It’s such a sweet sentiment and way to think of it. And your photo is stunning! Together they evoke such peace & joy! I love the sea!
Love the quote. Plus the scent of the ocean through the kissing odyssey.
Nice quote as well as that picture. I hope once I step on any of the Galapagos islands! 🙂
This quote is so beautiful and romantic. I love to think this way when I am sitting on the ocean side. Thank you for sharing this reflective words.
