Sometimes you visit a place and love it so much, you don’t want to leave!
Where is that place for you?
For me, I’ve felt like that about many places. For the last few years, it’s been Japan – Kyoto in particular, which we’ve now spent a total of 18 nights in but still want to go back. There are several safari camps in East and Southern Africa – safari is such a thrilling experience, not just the close-up sightings of the predators, elephants, hippos, giraffes, rhinos but also the quiet observation of birds and insects and the smaller animals. Antarctica as a whole, and Salisbury Plain in South Georgia in particular – stepping ashore amid half a million penguins is one of the most awe-inducing experiences I’ve ever enjoyed. I felt like I could stay forever!
This quote is one of many I love by Kahlil Gibran, a Lebanese-American poet best known for his inspirational book, The Prophet, published in 1923. In the guise of discussions between the principle character, Almustafa and those he encounters, the book shares inspirational passages on so much of the human condition; “love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.” (Wiki) Several passages from his book are popular as readings for weddings and at funerals.
The Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland is a striking building, incredibly photogenic from so many different angles – a playground of potential images for any avid photographer!

Lovely insights. I am still looking for my happy place.
Hope you find it, cous! Pete and I have a few — Japan in general, Kyoto in particular… the Touraine region of the Loire Valley in France… the Namib Rand in Namibia and the Okavango Delta in Botswana… and the Mara-Serengeti in Kenya and Tanzania… and there are many more places we’d happily go back to even if they are not yet quite in that special place list!
For me it’s Santorini…I don’t know why but it’s the only place in the world where I can completely switch off
I’ve never been but it does look beautiful and I can imagine how restful and pleasing to the eye that limited white blue colour palette for buildings is too.
This is a very nice quote. Some places touch us more than others, but I believe every place leave something in us somehow.
Yes that is very much true, something we have discussed in previous travel quotes actually! ?
what an amazing quote and to find it etched in the hall in Iceland! I will have to think about such a place. Sometimes I don’t feel like there is a place like that for me. In fact if I am not nomadic, perhaps that injures my spirit.
Though, I do love my home city of New Orleans and Spain overall is a great place for me to return to often.
Eric, it wasn’t etched into the hall, this series is basically me sharing my favourite quotes over some of my favourite images. I added the text manually.
What a beautiful quote. I have felt that way in a number of cities, and he totally captures the feeling.
Yes, it’s a very apt observation, as so much of his writing is.
Wow, you have had some amazing experiences! I would love to be surrounded be penguins! I find myself returning to London almost yearly
It’s an incredible experience! London, my home city, is pretty cool too though!
I’ve never been to Japan, but can’t wait to go and see if I have the same reaction. My “never want to leave” place has been Thailand- not necessarily even one particular location, I just love the whole country!
I would like to see more of Thailand, I’ve only been to Phuket and it was pleasant but I’m not really a beach person. I want to see the rest of this country!
well, I can think of a few places I felt like this. It’s wonderful feeling but reality is we all have to go back to our own reality eventually !
Yes, sadly we do!
Kahlil Gibran is one of my favourite poets! I have felt like that a few times, and hope it continues.
Yes, his words are so amazing.
What a beautiful quote. I just downloaded The Prophet. Looking forward to reading Kahlil Gibran’s work!
Oh how wonderful, I hope you enjoy it!
My answer to your question was Iceland before I’d even got to your photo – spooky!
Ha, I love that! 🙂
