Travel Quote Tuesday | John Steinbeck

“Many a trip continues long after movement in time and space have ceased.” ~ John Steinbeck

Perhaps best known for his novels and short stories, John Steinbeck also wrote several non-fiction titles including his travelogue, Travels with Charley: In Search of America, in which he portrayed a road trip he made with his poodle Charley, in 1960.

The short quote above is most commonly shared, but it’s worth reading the longer version below to really appreciate how accurately Steinbeck captured one of the most wonderful aspects of travel – the memories made and cherished for a lifetime.

“…many a trip continues long after movement in time and space have ceased. I remember a man in Salinas who in his middle years traveled to Honolulu and back, and that journey continued for the rest of his life. We could watch him in his rocking chair on his front porch, his eyes squinted, half-closed, endlessly traveling to Honolulu.”

I’ve always said that a great trip gives me three periods of joy – the anticipation that builds up during the research, planning, booking and waiting period, the wonderful experience of the trip itself, and the pleasure of recounting and reliving the memories for years and years to come.

I loved this quote as for some of the places I really feel in such a way that I am still there. Sometimes, I say to my friends that my soul is wandering there and I am physically present here. I don’t know why this happens but when I close my eyes, I feel and smell the air of that particular place. Loved this thought as it is very much connected to me.

This is a lovely quote. And definitely speaks of what I have always gone through after my trips and long after that. The mind never ceases to wander. Especially after I have visited ruins of any kind. I just feel like I have left a piece of myself in those places.

Places that we get excited about and plan to go to because they hold great significance for us will always be special. Assuming that our expectations are met or even exceeded while we are there, then the place(s) never truly leave us. I guess that is just a fabulous benefit of travel that way in that it stays with you always.

So true! And I agree with your three periods that a trip adds joy to. The memories, good or bad, last a lifetime and certainly enrich our experiences. I can’t imagine not traveling and I’m so grateful that I’m able to enjoy it.

John Steinbeck is a personal favourite and this quote of his is very close to the heart. Indeed one travels long after the physical part is done. As you have mentioned people travel multiple times to the place that they visit on the wings of their imagination.
