I love this passage about London, the city where I was born and where I live.
I debated whether to attribute this quote to Henry Ryecroft, a fictional character, or to the author who created him, George Gissing. The quote is from Gissing’s book, The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft, “a semi-fictional autobiographical work […] in which the author casts himself as the editor of the diary of a deceased acquaintance, selecting essays for posthumous publication.” (Wiki) Since the quote is presented as written by Ryecroft, I decided to leave it in his name.
As Samuel Johnson put it, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”
Taken during my first ride on the London Eye shortly after it opened, my favourite version of the image is this one, where everything but the distinctive London red buses are de-saturated. I love how the black and white shows off the architecture of the houses of parliament, and the splashes of red bring us back to the people travelling through it.

London is a beautiful city, one can not tire of it. However, it has become too crowded for older people to cope with, unless they have lots of money for a house and taxi travel 🙂
Yes, it’s very crowded and can be quite expensive for sure!
Reminds me of a quote by Samuel Johnson (if it is him!): When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.
Yes that’s actually in the post above!
Beautiful quote and beautiful photo Kavey. I became entranced with London as a child and knew I would live and work here when I “grew up”. Not sure I’ve grown up but at least I can now call London my home!
Thanks Emma! I’m not a grown up yet either!
This is such a great photo and a great quote. I went on the London Eye as part of my hen party, so it brings back lovely memories for me, too ?
I love the London Eye, went on it several times over first few years but not for long time now.
I love how the iconic London buses pop out in this picture against the backdrop of London. Such a beautiful quote!
Thanks Jemma, glad you like.
Loving the quote and the photo. Very evocative!
Thanks Jacs!
That makes me long for my old home Kavey… such a vibrant amazing place!
One of the most amazing cities on earth!
London is such a wonderful city! Both my sisters lived there for a while and I adored visiting them and taking not only the sights but the incredible atmosphere.
Your turn to live here next?
There really is nowhere in the world like London. Your post and photo make me excited to return for a visit next month!
Indeed, London is so London, nowhere else is quite like it! Thanks, hope we can connect this time, sorry I missed you last time!
I’m loving the quote and the picture! London is soooo beautiful in black & white & red 😉 I miss it sometimes…
Thanks Margot, come on back soon!
A lovely quote which makes me think of any city I’ve lived in as it would appear on a cold winters night!
London in the cold, especially when it’s foggy, can look incredible, but nothing beats it when the sun is shining!
Fab quote and a wonderful image to go with it Kavey. GG
Thank you GG!
