Travel Quote Tuesday | Food Makes Travel So Exceptional

“Food makes travel so exceptional, because you get to taste what it’s actually supposed to taste like. To eat the real Pad Thai or finally have a proper curry is something pretty amazing.
Meghan Markle

I saved this quote by actress Meghan Markle a few years ago, when she was ‘just’ someone I enjoyed watching in TV show Suits. The first reference I can find to the quote is in this interview about travel from 2013).

This weekend, she’ll be marrying into the British royal family, an altogether different role! I am sure she’ll be able to enjoy more great food on the honeymoon…

I identify with her thoughts completely! For us, one of the huge pleasures of travelling is to enjoy the cuisine, to seek out local specialities and to try the real versions of pale imitations we may have encountered at home.

One of the most exciting aspects of our recent trip to Thailand for me was being able to enjoy lots and lots of street food without getting sick. I’ve always had an overly sensitive digestion when travelling that I’d almost stopped expecting to be able to eat street food at all, but in Thailand I was fine. This was so exciting that we ate street food for most of our meals, wherever we found it!

We ordered this pad thai from one of the vendors at the Chiang Rai Night Market, one of our favourites of the trip.

What can I say, I totally agree. For me one of the most amazing things of travelling is indeed trying the local food. Even common food like a lot of Asian dishes (Thai, Chinese, Japanese,Vietnamese etc) or Italian food, that you find almost everywhere in the world tastes definitely different in the original places. Thailand is for me one of the best locations when it comes to great food.

I agree whole heartedly! Food when you travel can mean so much more being in the exact origin where a spice, a pasta, a sauce is originally developed. We love to experience all different types of food when traveling!

Tasting the fresh, local ingredients made in the traditional method is the best part of travel dining. The same fruit, grown in various locations, has a distinct flavor. And discovering a new fruit or vegetable, only grown in that region, is the best discovery!

Ah- trying the street food was one of my fav parts of visiting Thailand. And I had so many thai iced coffees while I was there too! Seriously addicting.

I love it that “real” pad Thai is served in an omelet. We went to Thipsamai in Bangkok and really enjoyed pad Thai served that way. Street food in Thailand is so good.

I TOTALLY agree!! Eating the “real” local food is one of the highlights of travelling for me as well. Although, having said that, I’m currently in Peru and I can’t quite bring myself to eat the Guinea Pig here!!! The Pad Thai’s in Thailand however are insane!!! I’m still desperately trying to teach myself to be able to reproduce one but it’s just not the same!

I agree with you that trying local food during traveling is very essential. Local food tour projects the real flavor and living of that particular place. I tried Georgian cuisine first time during my Georgia tour which I did not find anywhere.

Travel and food go hand-in-hand. Our trips are not complete without tasting the best food they have. No matter how tired we are, foods are great and humble comfort.

I so agree with your thought. Food make me happy and local food is the soul of travel. And especially when you say Thai food, I totally love indulging in Pad thai and their dessert, Mango and sticky rice with coconut rice. I am hungry already.
