Travel Quote Tuesday | Erol Ozan

I’m not generally a huge fan of getting lost. I have always felt more comfortable having a map on my person, or these days, a device that can load Google Maps and an internet connection.

That said, what I do love to do is wander in a local area without a planned route, often discovering the most wonderful little corners that I would surely have missed had I taken a straight line between where I was and where I was eventually going to. That’s how we stumbled across Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine in Kyoto – it certainly isn’t undiscovered but it was not a place we had planned to visit and yet it was one of our enduring favourites.

What beautiful places have you found when wandering without a map or destination in mind?

We have our itinerary (the destinations, the hotels, and some research on trains or whatever we’re using to get between places) planned but not the daily agenda, that’s when it can be nice to meander a little without a plan!

Love this quote – very true. Venice for me was the literal interpretation of this, a huge maze where you have to embrace getting lost. Even with a map it’s impossible to stay to a route, but that’s the charm of Venice – it’s not about an attraction or a specific point of interest, it’s about the atmosphere, and discovering the hidden gems around each narrow alleyway and corner 🙂

Oh yes Venice is the perfect example! We loved just heading to an area and meandering around it, knowing that once we were ready to move on, it wouldn’t be that hard to “unlose” ourselves again! Excellent example of this quote!

I love getting lost when exploring new cities – although not when I’m on a tight schedule. I’ve found local cafes, house and markets. We found hidden alleys in Venice and hidden waterfalls in Phuket.

I generally get lost – even with google maps! I like the freedom to discover things that way. But, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable without my security blanket!

My sense of direction is dire and I get lost with ease, which is where panic sets in. I think it must be the loss of control. Perhaps it’s an idea to just let go and be spontaneous. This way I’ve been able to make little discoveries as well!

I totally agree with you. I hate getting lost too. I remember, when I didnt understand any street signs in China and I would just wander around the streets without a map and discover pretty parks and sites. It was quiet an adventure.

Very true quote. One day I would love to get lost and go to a place that I have never been too. Getting lost and exploring new place is a good destress and re-charger for anyone.

Getting lost on purpose is exciting but getting lost by accident is scary.

I’ve found some great local places by getting lost and occasionally I’ll do it when I travel if I have time. Its sometimes nice just to see the river or buildings from a different perspective where I work on a lunchtime. You can always get back to a familiar point. Who knows the adventure you might have!

Such a beautiful place. I think the beauty about travel is that as long as you’ve never been there before everything is gonna be new. And even if you’ve been there before you always find something new. I’ve lived in Toronto all my life and I’m still finding new things. Lol. I guess it’s about perspective. If your there to explore you will find.
