Travel Quote Tuesday | Your Foot Upon Its Stones

“With your foot upon its stones, its pictures before you, and its history in your mind, it is something past all writing or speaking of – almost past all thinking of.” ~ Charles Dickens, on Venice

There’s something very special about Venice – not only the extraordinary phenomenon of a city in which the ‘streets’ are made of water, but also the incredible beauty of its architecture, from ornate palaces to humble homes, and the fascinating history of the city, and its people. You could spend a lifetime learning about the many facets of Venice and still have more to learn.

“With your foot upon its stones, its pictures before you, and its history in your mind, it is something past all writing or speaking of - almost past all thinking of." ~ Charles Dickens, on Venice

We first went to Venice over two decades ago, and adored it. We went again a few years later and then again just recently, relishing in the luxury of a full week to spend enjoying Venice once again. We “lived” in a spacious apartment within a beautiful historic palace and spent our days and evenings wandering the city’s streets and alleys, riding boats along the canals, and visiting nearby islands. We shopped at local markets, ate in bacari, trattorie, osterie and ristoranti and whiled away our days soaking in the details of this magical city.

I live half the year in Veneto, and pass Venice often. Now, it’s almost lost its charm for me just because I’ve seen it so many times! Still, I can understand its magic with new visitors; people really love it there!

I visited Venice many times and I was really awed by it in the beginning! But as I traveled more I discovered some equally beautiful places in Italy and the rest of the world. But the magical, capturing effect Venice has on first-time visitors is absolutely true.

Some inspirational words and ones that can brighten a day specially with the thought of a beautiful place like Venice. I visited this lovely city few years ago and it is beautiful and very poetic. Its got the style and the history all in one and can be a great place to be inspired and pen down a few words.

I loved Venice and it is really very poetic, dreamy and romantic. It is great that you visited twice and adored this place again, as during the first time many things are neglected or we can’t figure what is good or bad. But during our second visit, we know the place better and truly enjoy it. Great thought by a great author – Charles Dickens.

We have been three times, once in the late 90s, then in the early 2000s and finally again this year. Wonderful to go back again to somewhere you love!

Lovely blurb about Venice! I knew the city sits on water but I had no idea the streets were water! The spacious apartment in a historic palace sounds so nice!

Yes, it’s very much a city of canals rather than roads. There are many narrow alleyways for walking on foot though.

Venice has been on my bucket list for a long time. I’m not surprised that it inspired Charles Dickens. I would love to enjoy a week really exploring and taking it all in. Soon, I hope.

I like your idea of travel quote tuesday – where a picture and a quote says it all. I have never been to Venice, but Dickens’ words are enough to convince me. I like the way you explained how you felt the same on your 2 visits to Venice
