Travel Quote Tuesday | Anita Desai

‘Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.’

This theme comes up again and again in my favourite travel quotes. Everywhere we go, everything we see and experience, all of it ends up a part of who we are and how we see the world.

This quote is from Anita Desai, a celebrated Indian novelist and professor of Humanities.

(c) Kavita Favelle - Anita Desai - Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of those cities I love to visit. Its inhabitants have created a wonderfully warm and lively city which is a real pleasure to visit. Last time we visited, we focused almost entirely on food and drink experiences, which I shared in my posts about Amsterdam Coffee, Cakes & Snacks and Amsterdam Restaurants & Bars.

It’s certainly true. Every place I’ve traveled to has left an indelible print on my mind and in my soul. My view of the world has expanded immensely and my gratitude for this beautiful world God made for us has grown immeasurably!

YES! It’s what is so exciting about travel. What you experience becomes part of who you are. I’ve only managed a couple of day trips into Amsterdam and would love to explore it more. There are direct flights from Aberdeen so I should really make some plans.

I’ve only been to Vienna once, fairly briefly, would like to go back. Beijing is on my wish list.

That quote resonates with me. I think each place we visit and appreciate influences us in some way, whether or not we realize it immediately.

I love that quote! I can say that everywhere I’ve visited has definitely changed me in some way, and I’ve learned something in each place I’ve explored. It makes me excited to see what else I have in store for myself in future travels!

I agree, it’s like any other experience in life that actually shapes you into the person you become. The “only” difference is that when you travel, you get that one overwhelming experience of a rich, wide world full of beauties and diversities, that gives you such an immense sense of gratitude and adoration! Hence, you become a better person. 🙂

Yes, I think travelling often intensifies your senses and your willingness to be more open, and hence as you say, gives you so much happiness and gratitude.

I couldn’t agree more with Anita’s words. Everyplace we go, we leave a bit of ourselves, whether we know it or not. That’s one of the amazing things about travel!

The quote has certainly held true for me. Some places may not become a good part but everywhere has had an effect.
Amsterdam certainly didn’t leave a great impression but maybe because it was grey and wet for our entire stay.

Yes, that’s a great point, sometimes you may not love a place, but the impact will be there nonetheless – on your thoughts, on your tastes, on your understanding of the world.

It most certainly does! I’m a bit India, a bit Nepal, a bit Australia, a lot British and now a fair bit Romanian. It’s great to be a mix!

It’s very true, I have travelled to many places throughout my life, some to live, others just for a short visit and each has had a lasting impact on me.

Anita Desai is one of my favourite authors, and unsurprisingly her quote is so relatable, especially as a traveller. And I think it happens without you making an effort…

What a great quote. I totally believe it too. I think traveling allows us to connect with a place and that then becomes a part of who we are.
