Travel Quote Tuesday | Alice Meynell

The best travel moments linger in the memory not only for hours and days but for years, sometimes for a lifetime!

I love this passage by Alice Christiana Gertrude Meynell, an English writer, poet and suffragist born in the 19th century.

(c) Kavita Favelle - Alice Meynell - Antarctica

The photo is another from our first trip to Antarctica in 2004. We spotted these beautiful icebergs floating off the shore of the peninsula, glinting in the light as they very slowly turned. It felt like they, and we, had all the time in the world.

You took that photo? It’s absolutely stunning – although I don’t know if I could do the actual travel to Antarctica, I’ve heard so many horror stories of sea sickness.

I did, yes, thank you! The first time we went, we had a truly awful crossing of the Drake Passage. Most people were sick as a dog, including my Pete. Only 6 of 100 passangers made it out of their cabins to the canteen … I was one of them! The chairs had chains to attach them to the floor, the tables had lips and our beds had seatbelts to keep us from falling out! ?

Just reading your reply to Ayngelina above – truly brave Kavey! I’ve got a mild boat phobia and I think if I took that journey it’d be full scale fear!!

I never felt any fear, our boat was a proper sturdy ship built in Russia as a submarine hunter, so we understood it – there had been some hardcore sonic detection stuff on it that was officially referred to as wildlife detection! It also had this water bilge transfer thing that increased stability in some way, and the engines were quite quiet too.
