Travel Quote Tuesday | Alfred Tennyson

Travel is addictive!

If I’m not actually travelling, chances are good that I’m researching, planning and booking at least one future holiday if not two, not to mention processing images and writing up blog posts on the most recent trip.

Tennyson needs no introduction from me. I love this quote from his poem Ulysses, written in 1833 and published in 1842.

(c) Kavita Favelle - Alfred Tennyson - Arctic Sweden

Although we didn’t see the Northern Lights, we still enjoyed a wonderful family trip to northern Sweden a few years ago. This far north, the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon during the winter, so even the brightest hour of the day is a muted blue. And much of the day is as dark as night. This dog sled excursion lasted three to four hours and took us through some stunning scenery, though we were teeth-chatteringly cold, even with all our extreme-insulation clothing! A welcome lunch stop in the middle gave us some much needed warmth!

Thanks, we actually didn’t see them on this trip. We spent some time in the Ice Hotel (where we did this sledding excursion) and we also went to Abisko which is famous for the Northern Lights but we were unlucky in both places. Still beautiful places to visit though!

I’ve seen only the very faintest glimmer, on our last night of a mid-summer holiday to Iceland and once I saw some green from a plane but never had a proper sighting as it’s shown in all the photos!

I’d love to do something like this. We all get obsessed by the Northern Lights – and of course I’d love to see them too, but there IS a lot more to Scandi countries!

Yes, and I’m guilty of that too in that I’ve made a couple of trips really hoping to see it but this trip to Iceland was in the height of summer, so very short nights and very low chance of the Aurora Borealis. Such a stunning country though and the long days gave us plenty more time to explore!

Great quote! The Northern Lights are fairly tough to see. We’ve seen them a dozen or so times now, but is from more than 60 days spent on trips specifically to see the Northern Lights.

Oh wow! Yes I think we’ll need to dedicate more time in the northernmost regions in order to have some good sightings!

I’m the same way. Even when I intend to take a little break from travel, somehow I squeeze in a long weekend trip somewhere, or explore a new part of London. Life with more travel is just more fun!

Yes! We love “staycations” (as breaks within one’s own country seem to be called now) so we often do weekends, or even just single nights if close by.

I love this quote – one I hadn’t heard of before! Sorry to hear you didn’t see the Northern lights come out – elusive they are!! But glad it was a fabulous trip none the less. Just means you have an excuse to head back to Sweden!!

We didn’t really expect to see them on this trip as we travelled in summer so very short nights. Easier to see them during winter when the nights are long and dark – more time to spot them!

I am really excited about the opportunity to go dog-sledging and see the Northern Lights. But I guess you’re never really guaranteed that you will be seeing them. Fantastic landscape, though. Bed of snow all around. Can feel my nose going cold 🙂

No, never any guarantee. In Abisko, it’s really unusual not to see them so we were unlucky but that’s how luck goes sometimes!

I can’t really imagine what it’s like to live where there’s virtually no light during the day like that. I was in Sweden during the summer and it was light for almost the entire day. I prefer that! 🙂 Great quote.

Yes same here, I’ve been to Arctic Finland during the winter once and it was so incredibly gloomy, I’d struggle enormously to live there too.

What an amazing quote. I’m always looking up travel quotes for inspiration and I’ve not come across this one yet. It’s a shame you didn’t see the Northern lights- I hope you see them next time!
