Travel Quote Tuesday | Personal Taste

Everyone carries his own inch rule of taste, and amuses himself by applying it, triumphantly, wherever he travels.” ~Henry Adams

I think it’s inevitable when you travel that you filter what you see through your personal tastes. But I believe that your tastes are also moulded by travel, and subject to change as you see and experience more. Certainly, the more I learn more about parts of the world I’ve only recently started exploring, and the more I explore their cultures, traditional arts and architecture, the more I am able to appreciate beauty in forms that are very different to those I grew up with.

Rainbow escalators in Stockholm metro with text “Everyone carries his own inch rule of taste, and amuses himself by applying it, triumphantly, wherever he travels.” ~Henry Adams

You might find this colourfully lit escalator in one of Stockholm‘s metro stations the height of gaudiness or you might love the kitsch colours as much as I do – it made me smile each time we used this glorious rainbow-hued stairway. Many of Stockholm’s metro stations feature quirky and colourful decor, and are well worth exploring in their own right.

whoa so that escalator in one of Stockholm‘s metro stations is really lit up like this pic and it isnt just a filter? That is really cool.
I agree with you that we all travel with our own rose colored glasses but I love how my attitudes and view points are always altered when I actually travel.

Yep, no filters, it’s just as it is in real life! There is so much funky artistry in Stockholm metro stations!

I like this escalator- it’s so cool! A friend of mine did a tour of Stockholm’s metro system on his IG stories and it was so cool to see. I would love to see it in person sometime.

I love the colored escalator! I love seeing color added to things like this that are otherwise drab and boring. Now I will have to add Stockholm to my list of places to go.

It’s such fun, just a little detail that brings a smile to your face as you go up or down the escalators during your journey.

This is very true. We are shaped by our experiences.

Nothing encourages self-discovery and opens our mind to other cultures and world history like travel

We love traveling with friends. It allows us to experience the locations for ourselves, whilst also seeing them through other peoples eyes.

Thanks for sharing this. Keep blogging and traveling. Adventure is better when shared with friends.

I totally agree, my places I have traveled have molded my tastes and have also broadened my horizons to things I normally wouldn’t do or like. Love the colours of this image, too!

This is so true. Each of its own. We have different desires and different ways to fulfill them. Relativity. Nothing is so wrong and nothing is so right. It all depends on which angle we are looking at things.

I wish I had taken the Subway more to Stockholm and gotten to explore the art. I love how more places are turning the subways into a place of art and not so dirty and dark.

Very well said…all one needs is an openness to start with. Of course, as one travels more, openness increases and that allows for new experiences and newer ways of looking at things…

These are pretty cool to be honest, but I love that we can each travel the world with our own eyes and find our own beauty and interests

Haven’t been to Stockholm but from pictures I’ve seen, seems quite colorful. And we recently started traveling full time and we are learning so much about cultures too. It’s so eye opening and a beautiful experience!

PSH that’s not gaudy – that’s awesome 🙂 that would make riding the metro a little bit better! Also, you always feature the best quotes, and your reflections on them are always a pleasure to read. Agree that taste continues to evolve with experience – wouldn’t life be boring if it didn’t?
