Scarlett Green | An Aussie-Style All Day Cafe, Bar & Restaurant

Scarlett Green in Soho is the latest restaurant from the Daisy Green Collection. This all day café-restaurant-bar is inspired by the Aussie café culture popular in Melbourne and Sydney, and offers a globally-influenced menu in a laid-back, elegant space.

The menu includes a selection of all-day brunch dishes, as well as single bites, small plates, and salads, plus dishes suitable for a more substantial lunch or dinner. These include the Collection’s popular grass-fed, rare-breed, dry-aged steaks, cooked on a custom-made Josper Grill.

The Scarlett Green bar boasts London’s largest Australian wine list, with over 24 Aussie wines available by the class. There also craft beers by Fourpure in Bermondsey and some great smoothies and soft drinks.

For music lovers, there’s live acoustic music upstairs from 4pm daily, and DJ sets Thursday to Saturday for a late-night party buzz.

Invited to review the restaurant, and encouraged by enthusiastic staff, we ordered far too much (and they almost had to roll us out of the door!) but it did allow us to get a pretty good feel for the menu.

The lunch section of the menu offers a selection of five small bites, and we ended up trying all of them!

Spicy tuna tostadas (£2.80 each) were a single-mouthful snack, and absolutely delicious, but the price seems disproportionately high for the size, ingredients or preparation.

Vegemite, cheese & truffle doughnuts (£2.80 each) were much more generous in size for the same price, and really delicious too. The truffle flavour was wonderful, and worked nicely with the cheese and the gentle savouriness from the Vegemite.

Halloumi fries, pomegranate yogurt (£7.80) were a perfect snack, served hot from the fryer and with a wonderful crunchy golden exterior. The yoghurt and pomegranate were a bit meh, and hard to dip into smeared on the plate rather than in a little pot, but the cheese sticks themselves were great!

I absolutely loved the Beef shin cigarillos, tamarind sauce (£7.60). Inside, a soft, pulled, spiced beef filling wrapped in thin, crunchy filo pastry, these were one of my favourites of the meal.

Sea bream ceviche, avocado, tigers milk, nori, crunchy corn (£9.80) was another favourite; a perfect blend of soft fish, crunchy corn and large starchy Peruvian corn. The dish was generous with the dressing (the tigers milk) which gave a punch of flavour.

From the brunch menu, Shakshouka, spiced tomatoes, peppers, labne, baked eggs, charcoal toast (£10.70) was a colourful dish, especially with the black charcoal toast (which tastes like regular toast, if you’re wondering). The shakshouka itself wasn’t earth-shattering – we felt it would have benefited from more of a spicy flavour punch, instead of it was a bit too tinned tomatoes with a few red peppers thrown in.

The Twice cooked duck fat fries, truffle mayonnaise (£4.50) were excellent, crisp and golden, soft inside and amazing with the richly truffled mayo.

I chose my main from the Healthy Salads section of the menu. I was a bit surprised at the pricing again for the Green mango, watermelon, samphire, carrot, cashews, pickled watermelon rind, nuoc cham (£9.80), plus another £7.50 to add 100 grams of Scarlett prawns. The salad was nice enough (though stingy on the watermelon and cashew nuts) but fairly small. The table next to us had the salad without any additions and it made it even more obvious (to me) that portion size and price were mismatched.

We were pretty full but our waiter suggested we should try desserts, so we greedily pushed on! He explained that the Melbourne Mars Bar cheesecake ball (£7.80) is their most popular dessert, so we chose that one first. I was a bit surprised that it was served to the table with one side smashed up (as though the sphere had been dropped) but other than that, it was impressive on the plate. Our main surprise here was the low quality of the chocolate – it tasted more like the super cheap chocolate-flavoured bars sold to cooks many moons ago than actual chocolate – but the filling of cheesecake and caramel was much more pleasant.

The Vegan chocolate cake (£6.00) was really good! All the things I like in a cake – moist, a good chocolate flavour without being overly sweet, and I loved the hidden filling of fruity sauce. The raspberries and coulis on the plate were also a good match.

Overall, we really enjoyed our lunch at Scarlett Green, both in terms of the food and the relaxed and friendly vibe. I thought prices were broadly very fair, with just a couple of items surprisingly pricy for what they were, and against the rest of the menu. One aspect I really liked was the global influences across the menu, making it quite eclectic and with something to suit a wide variety of moods or tastes.

Scarlett Green is open seven days a week from early breakfast until late (Monday – Friday 7am to midnight, Saturday 8am to midnight, Sunday 9am to 10:30pm).

Save for later:

The food looks great! I like the look of Sea bream ceviche.
I make Watermelon skin pickle style bhaji, but I have never made a pickle with it. Tell me more, I might experiment with a pickle of my own!

It’s not a classic long-life pickle, but a light pickling, probably just the watermelon put into vinegar and sugar liquid for an hour or two.

Yeah, we really enjoyed the meal, the space itself, the vibe… and pretty much all of the food. I think the pricing of a couple of items was a bit high but the rest were very reasonable.

Wow. Looks like an interesting place to dine with a massively wide menu. Agree about the smashed cheese cake, but the prawns and tuna tartar looked delicious.
