Travel Quote Tuesday | Open Your Mind

“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.” ~ Anthony Bourdain

Since Bourdain’s death earlier this year, I’ve been keener than ever to share his quotes, which always resonate with me so strongly.

Those who travel, especially to see, explore and experience places and cultures very different from our own, often seem to have an open-minded approach to the myriad things that make people different, whilst at the same time appreciating that on another level, we are really all the same at heart.

I have previously taken that to be causal – that the act of seeing and understanding how different life can be and is around the world is what changes one’s attitudes to how people “should” live their lives back home. But perhaps, after all, it’s the other way around, and those who are naturally more tolerant of differences, not just tolerant but open to and excited by them, are the ones most likely to be drawn to travel?

Would love to hear your thoughts about this wonderful quote!

I love moving, changing places and choosing new destinations. I think changing the environments helps me to charge batteries and come back with new energy. I really like this quote and I used it on my blog as well.

I haven’t read this quote before but I absolutely agree with it and would recommend it to everyone. I believe that traveling gets you out of your comfort zone and makes you experience things that will eventually make you a better person. Seeing how people do things somewhere really far from home walking in their shoes, and eating your food and bunch of other things only shows (at least from my personal experience) that ultimately, they are not so different than you. Traveling has the power to cut the gap between us and them…

The last line will echo for me .. “…Open your mind, get up off the couch, move..” I think traveling can really be the best teacher and its important to be open, respectful of others and take in all that it offers you. I have learnt more about geography by venturing into forests and different landscapes than in my school, many languages by visiting new destinations and learnt new cuisines without ever going to a cooking school. This quote got me reflective and reconfirmed many things 🙂

I like this comments. Makes me think of visiting countries we like to boycott. I also think it’s better to get out and share ideas rather than stay away from countries you don’t agree with.

This quote literally speaks for itself and about the importance of travel. No matter, the age, sex, or martial status, everyone discovers something unique about themselves, when they finally get out of their comfort zone and take that step.

I think some people are naturally more inclined to travel than others, for sure, but people can definitely learn to become more tolerant of other cultures by traveling more. Great quote from Bourdain.
