I hadn’t had time to do any research about where to eat when spending a few days in Ross-on-Wye to attend a pottery course recently, so was relieved that the hosts of our beautiful bed and breakfast gave us a list of recommendations, one of which was Yaks & Yetis, a Ghurka restaurant, serving predominantly Himalayan and Nepalese cuisine, with some Thai dishes also available.
As you might expect, many of the ingredients and flavours used in Nepal have a lot in common with the food of India and Bangladesh, as well as Tibetan and Chinese influences. But there are a number of distinctly Nepalese dishes on offer, making this a restaurant well worth visiting for anyone who already enjoys the better-known food of Nepal’s neighbours.
For our starters, we shared an order of Pork Momos (£4.95 for four pieces served with a punchy orange sauce). The dumplings were full of flavour, soft and juicy inside, and a great start.
We also ordered Lamb Samosas (£4.95, for three pieces, served with a sweet chilli sauce). Wrapped in filo pastry rather than the more traditional, thicker pastry I’m familiar with, they were nonetheless excellent – hot, crunchy, and delicious.
Asking our waiter for recommendations for dishes that were typically Nepalese, we ordered Kathmandu Lamb Curry (£8.95) and Sandeko Khukura (£7.95, described as chicken breast marinated in ginger, garlic, vinegar and soy sauce and cooked with onion, tomato and spices). The latter, although less expensive, also came with salad and rice.
As the Kathmandu curry didn’t come with a side, we also took an order of plain Nepalese Bread (£1.95, also available in garlic and garlic coriander versions). This was quite unlike the various Indian breads I’m familiar with, made from wheat flour, yeast, butter and eggs, it was almost savoury scone-like in texture.
For drinks, I loved my plain sweet Lassi (£2.75). Nepalese beers and your usual selection of wine and soft drinks are also available.
Service was warm and friendly, and we enjoyed our meal. We are hoping to go back to the area soon to attend another pottery course, so I’m sure we’ll visit Yaks and Yetis again when we do.
