Travel Quote Tuesday | Where Are You Going?

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” ~ George Harrison

Often mis-attributed to Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland books, this quote is actually from a George Harrison song, “Any Road”, albeit inspired by a scene in which Alice asks the Cheshire Cat for directions:

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where—” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.
“—so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation.
“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”

How I interpret this quote often depends on what mood I’m in at the time. Sometimes, when I have a clear objective in mind, or a vision of where I want to be (or what I want to achieve), then it’s important to take the right path, the right steps, to take me there. Other times, I am happy simply to live life and see where it takes me, in which case I can simply take the path that seems most appealing at the time and find out the destination when I arrive!

This is the beautiful Kirkstone Pass in Cumbria, a wonderfully scenic drive in the Lake District.

It’s interesting isn’t it, how we can find such a philosophical topic that resonates with us in adulthood in what was essentially a story written for children.

If the scene is like that and the road like that, I don’t really need any more inspiration to get on the bike and take a nice relaxing long long ride!

I love this dialogue from Alice in Wonderland. You are right that it could be interpreted differently in different moods. I used it frequently in my training sessions and could make it fit into very different modules based on the context. When we travel too, this philosophy helps to get a directions sometimes 🙂

What a great quote and how true, some of the best adventures are when you head out and see where you end up! Love the photo, isn’t the Lake District beautiful?

This quote is about so much more than travel. Sure any road gets you somewhere at some point. But I love how it is also about life. Thanks for the reminder!

This quote is very reflective of the idea that it’s not about the destination, but the journey. It’s about remembering our overall goals in life, but enjoying the journey on our way to reaching it. At least that’s what I think!

Very beautiful quote! Sometimes we have to go with the path or wind. Not always we have perfect aim or plan in our life but we have to go along with other choices and unplanned destinations or journeys are the best ones.
