I was filled with sorrow when I learned of Anthony Bourdain’s death a few days ago, more so that it was by his own hand. It was a stark reminder that we know so little about what is going on in other peoples’ minds and that anyone can be affected by depression.
Like many, I was a huge fan of Bourdain, for his writing and for his TV shows. I loved his fearless approach to travel, foodie travel in particular. I loved how committed he was to really understanding a local culture through its cuisine, and unlike many others, his shows were always warm, exciting, genuine and hugely inspiring. There was none of that tendency to patronise or exoticise that many other presenters fall into.
Although he was only 61 years old, it seemed to be that he lived a full life. As a chef, as a writer, as a presenter, as a person, as a fellow traveller and the many other sides of his life that us fans know little about.
I hope his family and friends can find some tiny mote of comfort in the knowledge that he inspired so many people, and I hope that the rest of us are reminded to follow our dreams, and to seize life with both hands.

He certainly affected a lot of people.
I too was so sad to read about his death. He was really an inspiration, not just in his travels, but also his open-mindedness to different food cultures, and cultures in general. It’s a lovely quote and one people will always remember him for.

Jeez, I think I was one of the only people on the earth that wasn’t a big Bourdain fan. I tried watching his stuff, but he always came across as really pompous to me.
