Travel Quote Tuesday | Like Being In Love

“Travel, for me, is a little bit like being in love because suddenly, all your senses are at the setting marked ‘on.’ Suddenly, you’re alert to the secret patterns of the world.” ~ Pico Iyer

This is so true, isn’t it? That feeling when you fall in love and all your senses are heightened, you are alive with excitement, all your emotions are in overdrive… you feel like you’re experiencing everything in lurid technicolour against the black and white monotone of everyday life…

Travel is like very much like this for me. I hardly live a dull life at home, with a wonderful work and home-life, plenty of hobbies and interests, socialising with friends… but heading off on a trip definitely increases the level of excitement I feel every moment I’m awake, and it seems to me that I absorb everything in much more detail.

Do you find you are more alert to the world when you are travelling or is it more of a case of dialling down and relaxing when you take a break away from home?

“Travel, for me, is a little bit like being in love because suddenly, all your senses are at the setting marked 'on.' Suddenly, you're alert to the secret patterns of the world.” Pico Iyer

After two trips to the Antarctic, taking in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula, we decided to dedicate our next trip in this region solely to the Falklands, spending three weeks there back in 2010. Starting and finishing in Port Stanley, we island-hopped to experience the different landscapes and bird colonies of Carcass Island, West Point, Pebble Island, Saunders Island, plus Volunteer Point on East Falkland.

For those interested in bird watching and photography, the Falkland Islands are a wonderful destination for a trip, allowing you to easily spend hours and hours observing colonies of black-browed albatrosses, imperial shags, gentoo penguins, magellenic penguins, king penguins, rockhopper penguins, not to mention southern giant petrel, striated caracara, brown skua, steamer-ducks, upland geese, and many many more species.

These two are gentoo penguins.

Such a good and true point! Senses are heightened. When we travel I feel like I am looking around more often instead of looking down.Totally agree with this. Enjoy your next trip to the Falklands!

I’m more alert when travelling as I have to leave my comfort zone behind. But that does not mean I can’t relax and have a good time. By the way, great photo of the gentoo penguins!

I can so relate to what you feel about travel. It somehow just feels liberating and no matter how much you do through the day, I don’t feel tired at all. I hope I make it to Falkland Islands. It looks so interesting from what you describe and while I cannot say that I am good birder, I like to catch some anyway. Cheers

Yes, it’s very much like falling in love. First time you get there, there’s this curiosity, there’s this attraction, the excitement, and the longer you stay, the more frequent you visit, you see it differently, you realize if you love it or not, if it’s a place you’d come back to or not.

Oh, I’m definitely more alive and alert when I’m traveling. It is incredibly exciting to see new places and meet new people. I actually feel like I’m more “me” when I’m traveling than any other time!

What a wonderful way to put into words what I’ve often felt, but never said. Travel is amazing, it’s like putting life -and penguins – into technicolour.

I so agree with your opening quote. Great quote. I love it. And, yes, travel is like being in love. A love affair that doesn’t lasts for a reason, season but for a life time.

Good point , that. In an unfamiliar place you are bound to be extra alert. Not only in terms of safety but also to the cultural aspects. Your brain is extra keen to understand the goings on.
