Travel Quote Tuesday | The First Step

“The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that is difficult.” ~ Mme. Du Deffand

I have never found travel daunting, most likely because I was born into a family that loves to travel, and have done so all my life. Pete had travelled hardly at all when we met, so for him, that first international flight (flying to Paris on his own to meet up with me) was a little scarier, though he flew through it with his usual laid-back panache!

I do occasionally feel overwhelmed when planning a trip to somewhere we’ve never visited before, especially if it’s to somewhere I know little about at the start of the process. It was a little like that when I started planning our visit to Taiwan, a short break of 5 nights as a stop off on the way to Hong Kong. But I once I dived in and read what seems like a million online travel guides and blog posts, I narrowed down on Taroko Gorge National Park in combination with the city of Taipei and the familiar thrill of pulling together a trip kicked in.

Do you feel any nerves or a little daunted when travelling (or planning travel) to somewhere new?

We had a wonderful trip, and indeed I’d love to go back to explore much more of Taiwan, including more time in Taipei. Above is a beautiful pedestrian suspension bridge in Taroko Gorge National Park. Pete is looking out at the spectacular view of the river below, rushing through the steep-sided gorge.

I don’t feel nerves when planning, but the day of travel, until I’m actually on the plane, I’m a massive bundle of nerves – I’ve come close to panic attacks in the car on the way to the airport. (TBH, I get minor versions of it when travelling in the UK.) It sounds bonkers, but I’m convinced we’ll get burgled or the house will burn down, but once I’m on my way there’s nothing I can do about it so the panic subsides.

We’re off to India this year; I’ll be one big ball of stress before *that* flight.
