Travel Quote Tuesday | Travel & Food

I don’t think I could have a genuine relationship with someone who didn’t love to travel and appreciate new foods. Traveling is a big part of my life, and I want to share that with the people close to me.” ~Candice Accola

When I met Pete, he’d tried little outside of the traditional British family-style cooking he grew up on and hadn’t yet travelled abroad beyond France, twice on school trips. Fortunately for me, when we started dating he quickly took on board my love for foreign food and travel, and he’s opened his mind and his belly to more and more new tastes and textures during the 25 years we’ve been together. There are still a few things he balks at eating, but in the main he’s as excited as I am to explore local cuisine. Food is a huge part of our travelling life and I know I’d find it hard to travel extensively with someone who didn’t feel the same way!

What about you? Is enjoyment of local cuisine one of the key pleasures of travel for you? What about your travelling companions, do they feel the same way? If not, how does their lack of enthusiasm affect your appreciation of food while travelling? I’d love to hear your experiences and thoughts!

A large tray of Macau custard tarts and plus textover of “I don't think I could have a genuine relationship with someone who didn't love to travel and appreciate new foods. Traveling is a big part of my life, and I want to share that with the people close to me.” ~Candice Accola

I have long had a sweet spot for both English custard tarts and the super sweet Portuguese pasteis de nata. Both of these made their way to East Asia via the English and Portuguese, during the era of colonialism but they really took off when Englishman Andrew Stow launched a business importing and selling European baking goods, and soon after, a bakery specialising in European cakes and breads. Stow experimented with a recipe incorporating aspects of both English and Portuguese custard tarts, but also took into account the Chinese preference for less sweet desserts. Stow’s custard tarts quickly gained a very loyal following and the business expanded into other cities across East Asia.

I sampled these in at the original location of Lord Stow’s Bakery, in the Coloane Village neighbourhood of Macau.

I adore these little pastries! There was a café near me that sold them and they were always so popular that it was a struggle to ever find any! I don’t do as much travelling as I would like but figure I will make up for it in my 60s!

Yes, there’s a coffee shop near one of the client offices I worked in for a few months earlier this year, they had Portuguese ones in every Tuesday and Thursday mornings and they sold out FAST!

They are so good aren’t they? The Macau ones are a touch less sweet but similarly fantastic!

I love these. In South Kensington there is a little cafe by the station and they only serve pasteis de nata – they are wonderful. Wow, 25 years is an amazing time together and I’m so pleased Pete took to travelling with you! Hope all is going well in the lead up to Christmas.

I could not agree more with these words! I was SO happy, when I met Frenchie! He loves to cook, he knows so much about food and wine… And he is a traveller as well! It is true that opposites attract, but for the long run I believe that some common values are very important.

Yes, it’s not that one has to share all hobbies and interests but some common ones are important, whatever those might be!

I’ve never had an English custard tart although I do love pasteis de nata! It’s awesome that Pete is so open to trying new foods!!!!! I unfortunately don’t have a significant other to travel with, but I can definitely see Accola’s valid point.

They say the best people are the ones who enjoy food, and I agree whole heartedly. Food is a great unifier too, the singular universal way to bond with anyone, anywhere in the world 🙂

This quote was made for my husband and I. Fits us to a tee! Like you and your husband, we travel to eat and we make sure we make the most of every experience, both travel and food. As for the portuguese tarts – I actually found these in a tiny place in London too and I’ve loved them ever since.

So pleased to hear that the quote resonates for you both too! There are several places in London that do very good Portuguese pasteis de nata! Love them.

I could definitely agree with the “love to travel” part. I find that talking to people who don’t have that love and appreciation can be a little frustrating to talk to, because they don’t see things in the same way. They look at the world very differently than I do.

Not sure about the food part though, haha. As a super picky eater, I tend not to like a majority of the food in the countries I visit.

Aaah that must make the food but trickier for sure, I eat most things so it’s easy! I know what you mean about looking at the world differently though!

Those custard tarts look and sound divine! And I’m with you (and the quote) about always trying new food. I’m a really tame eater at home, but whenever I’m abroad, I will try at least a bite of almost anything, especially if it’s of cultural significance. I even tried puffin in Iceland, which I feel a wee bit bad about, but I had a native Icelander sitting right next to me and egging me on hahah

Haaaa, I understand! I’ll mostly try anything once but have said no only occasionally, where it’s an endangered species or associated with excessive cruelty. But otherwise I’ll try most things!!

I’ve never tried the tarts but they sound great. For me, it was Travel and spas. It took years to convince my husband on the joys of soaking of hot springs and kicking back at the spa. We both love food, but not the same kind!

Oh wonderful, we’ve come to love the hot springs by way of three visits to Japan, even though we were unsure the first time, more nervous than anything! ?

This is indeed so close to the heart. Indeed having someone to share the travel experiences multiples the joy of the experience manifold. We too share a weakness for tarts and all kinds of desserts which we love to explore.

Blasphemy I know, lol but I actually don’t really think too much about local cuisine when we’re overseas. We more see food as a way to survive and a part of everyday life as opposed to being hardcore foodies. Usually stop by grocery stores and cook our own meals, I do enjoy trying new tastes and exotic cuisines, but it’s not a big deal for me if I come home without having done so.

Gasp!!! That *is* blasphemy! ??? But actually shopping in local supermarkets and cooking is hugely fun too, so I reckon that’s all good! ?

It’s definitely great to have a partner to travel with! My husband and I aren’t the biggest of foodies, so our travels don’t revolve around food but we do like to try local foods. My husband is a bit of a picky eater but is always up for coming along when I want to try something he isn’t interested in. Those Stow’s custard tarts look delicious–would love to try them!

That sounds perfect, as long as he’s up for coming along with you for the foodie part of the adventure too, it’s ok if he doesn’t like everything! ?

I think people who travel for pleasure are generally more open-minded, tolerant and embracing of different cultures and world cuisines. My husband isn’t a big foodie as me, but he enjoys going out to eat a lot.
We had the little Portuguese tarts in Lisbon. Our hotel put them out every evening with port on a complimentary basis for the guests. They are scrumptious.

I can relate. It’s your passion and what you love. In my case, I’m an avid mountain trekker as a traveler so it’s more about looking for someone who is a hiker/mountaineer – it does make a difference to be someone who shares your passion – the experience is truly unique and joyful!

Yes I totally understand, it’s a passion that is made to share, so finding someone who does makes total sense!

Travel for me is so much about the food…I love to try local cuisines! My children have the travel bug too…I’m thrilled that they all consider it important to see the world. I wish I had done more when I was younger, but there is still plenty of time! My husband is more about quick trips than the longer ones, but fortunately I do have a few friends that are good for an adventure here and there too…it’s always nice to have a fun travel companion!
