Travel Quote Tuesday | Aitareya Brahmana

The Brahmanas are a collection of ancient Hindu theological texts. They incorporate Hindu myths and legends, explanations and instructions about Vedic mantras and rituals, and commentaries of a more philosophical nature. Veda is the Sanskrit word for Knowledge, and the Vedic texts are the focus of religious instruction and study. There are different schools of Vedic study focusing on different aspects of the four Vedas, each with its own Brahmana texts. The Aitareya Brahmana is claimed by scholars to date from 800 BCE to 500 BCE.

Although two to three millennia is nothing in the lifespan of mankind, I am still amazed to find within such ancient texts a statement that resonates so strongly with modern day life and feelings.

Of course, there are many paths to happiness and I would never be so prescriptive as to suggest that travel is the only one. And yet… as one who loves travel immensely, I can’t help but identify with the statement.

This is one of my film-days photographs, taken somewhere in the UK, somewhere ‘up North’ I think or possible one of the moors in the South West? If you know where it is, I’d love to be reminded.

I have always anthropomorphised these rock formations, seeing in the shapes and shadows a thinker leaning his head on his arm.

I recently got into stoicism and it’s mind boggling as to what was said thousands of years ago can still be applied to today. Technology might have changed, but human nature hasn’t.

I really love this quote. It’s one that I very much agree with. I studied eastern religion in college, and have always held a soft spot in my heart for a lot of their teachings. I obviously agree with this whole-heartedly. To travel is to live, in my opinion.

I love this quote so much – travel is such a big part of life, regardless of whether we travel overseas or even short trips within the country we live in! Also, I love your b&w film photo – I’ve recently started shooting in film, and it always warms my heart when I see others share film photography!

I’ve seen a few documentaries about Brahmanas and the Hindu culture. They fascinate us a lot! The one you choose is perfect for the picture!

Thank you, I’ve always anthropomorphised this photograph in my head and seen it as a thinker, so I thought of it immediately for this quote.

I agree that traveling is not the only way to be happy, too. Although, like you, as an avid traveler myself, I totally relate with this statement. Saving the pic for future use!

Yes, there are many paths to happiness but for those of us who love to explore, it’s hard to be fully satisfied without it!

I couldn’t imagine life without travel, so I guess that quote could be true. But there are lots of people who never travel anywhere and I wonder if they are missing out. Or perhaps you don’t miss what you don’t know?

I think not everyone has that internal need to discover new places, so I imagine that they are happy without travelling, even if they have done some travel at some time!

Ancient Hindu culture/history is indeed very interesting! This quote is so beautiful and meaningful. One does not need to use a lot of words to say something powerful. These old quotes prove that 🙂

Absolutely right, Confucius is a great example of some concise and yet powerful quotes.

Totally agree with this quote. When I started to actively shape my life around where I would travel next, I have become an immensely happier person.

Wow, I love a quote which makes you stop and think the way this one does. Travel is so important and living life, in one spot with all it’s responsibilities certainly brings joy to no one.

Well, I think there are some homebodies who gain immense satisfaction from life even without the travel. But for you and me and many others, there is so much joy in travel!

Wow, I love your film photography but I have to disagree with the quote. Although travelling makes me happy, I know plenty of people who have never travelled who are perfectly content with their lives. Actually, some of the happiest people I know, my grandparents, for example, have never even left The UK!

I like what you did here. I agree: you don’t need travel to be happy, but it does make me happy as well!

Yes indeed. There are many things I gain huge happiness from – my husband, family and friendships are very high on the list. But travel is definitely high up there too!
