I’m not generally a huge fan of getting lost. I have always felt more comfortable having a map on my person, or these days, a device that can load Google Maps and an internet connection.
That said, what I do love to do is wander in a local area without a planned route, often discovering the most wonderful little corners that I would surely have missed had I taken a straight line between where I was and where I was eventually going to. That’s how we stumbled across Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine in Kyoto – it certainly isn’t undiscovered but it was not a place we had planned to visit and yet it was one of our enduring favourites.
What beautiful places have you found when wandering without a map or destination in mind?
