Travel Quote Tuesday | Clifton Paul Fadiman

We’ve all come across those holiday makers who complain that the food, the service and endless other things are not like they are at home, inferring of course that they are not as good.

For me, one of the key joys of travel is to discover all the myriad ways that everyday life is different to how it is at home. I love using public transport, visiting supermarkets, taking a cookery class with a local, visiting a local place of worship, and just walking the streets among the people of that place.

This quote is from Clifton Fadiman, an American writer, editor, television and radio personality best known for his radio quiz show ‘Information Please’.

Amsterdam is a wonderful destination for a city break, especially for those who love walking, bicycling or hopping on local trams.

I love this quote, and it does make a lot of sense as when I travel I want to experience the culture, the food and everything which makes travelling very interesting. I really want to visit Amsterdam again!

Me too, what I love is that the place is different to home. If it were just the same, there would be no need to travel! And it is the very differences in cultures that have created many of the sights I want to see and the food I want to eat!

Thanks Fiona! My parents emigrated to the UK before I was born and have always loved to travel, so I was fortunate to travel a lot from a very early age… I think all of us have always been fascinated with experiencing and learning about other cultures.

I like to collect travel quotes, too. This quote is a good reminder that when we travel, we are doing so in order to experience something new. One should not go to a new country and expect it to be like home. In fact, I would be really disappointed if it were!

Yes, wouldn’t it just? I mean it’s lovely when there’s some random aspect that is the same as home when most things are not, but generally, I travel to experience other places and cultures!

Great quote. Who wants to get too comfortable traveling anyways, its much more fun if you keep yourself busy and explore a bit.

I’ve met people who have told me, straight up, that they only travel to guarantee warmer weather and cheap food, but if they could have everything else be like home, they’d be happy! Gobsmacked!

Love this quote and totally agree! I always find it funny when people want everything to be like home when they travel–the differences are what makes traveling great!

One of my fave travel quotes! it is true that a country should improve its infrastructures to invite more tourism. however, a visitor should not think that just because things are done differently in his or her country, that the same should be done in the country he is visiting. When in Rome, do as the Romans do as they said. 🙂

Well, that depends on whether the country wants more tourism or not. These days I think most places do, but I would think if one has a strong economy without tourism, that improving the tourist infrastructure would not be a priority. I totally agree on your last point though – when in Rome!

I really love this quote! I do get sick of people complaining about a country because it’s too busy or dirty or whatever! it’s all part of the experience! If everywhere was the same it would be super boring.

I think half the fun of traveling is being outside your comfort zone and trying new things that you wouldn’t have imagined at home. It’s exhilirating!
