Hotel Chocolat Valentine Giveaway (Closed)

We both adore chocolate so it’s often part of our birthday, Christmas and anytime gifts to each other. We seldom buy boxes of chocolates (it’s usually bars, far better value), and very rarely on Valentine’s day. But I confess I would be more than happy to be given this big chocolate Hotel Chocolat Love Birds chocolate heart! Featuring a very pretty love birds design, half is salted caramel chocolate and the other half 50% milk praline. (£26; 650 grams).

  • The Valentines Goody Bag (containing chocolate and passion fruit truffles; a pack of caramel sweethearts; two 50g milk chocolate Mellow Heart slabs; Champagne Truffles; and a Valentine’s truffle duo of Caramel Gianduja and a Strawberry Cheesecake; £18).
  • This bottle of Cocoa Gin made in small batches in traditional copper-pot stills; roasted cocoa shells contribute to the rich flavour. (£15, 250ml).
  • A box of six balsamic caramel hearts (£3.75).

We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, or at least we do but not on February 14th, the reason being that back in our student days, it was the most popular date for couples to announce their engagement. So, not wanting to be like everyone else, we put off our official engagement until February 21st and since then it has always been our “Valentine’s Day”. 40 years this year!

My favourite memory is going for a walk when me and my husband lived somewhere rural before getting married. We found a rock that was shaped a little like a heart. I used it as a doorstop and still have it.

My husband and I always enjoy a romantic meal out on Valentine’s Day, but one year he surprised me with a meal at a top posh restaurant which was right out of our price range.

The food was delicious and it was a lovely surprise.

The Valentine’s before we got together, my now-Husband wanted to ask me out but was too scared. So he asked 3 of his mates to go to the cinema and invited me along so he could spend time with me without it being a ‘date’. Of course being Valentine’s Day, the cinema was packed and we couldn’t even find a parking space. We ended up driving round for a bit before he dropped me off home first! He plucked up the courage to tell me how he felt the following week!

Last year battling through the worst storm of the year, with our friends, to have a fantastic meal at River Cottage, there was an air of “pioneer” amongst the diners. Being taken in a tractor trailer, its plastic sides flapping, to the meal whilst being “dolled up to the nines” and wearing wellies will never be forgotten.

My first Valentine’s with my other half, he bought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers…which vibrated across the coffee table as an earthquake hit. Several years later we were visiting friends in the Philippines, and spent Valentine’s Day climbing up to Mt Pinatubo, where we went for a dip in the crater lake. A great way for a geologist and geophysicist to spend a romantic day together!

In the early days when we were married my husband sent me a Valentines rose to work, which as delivered from the flower shop next door. This was a nice surprise – however he later phoned me and told me to pop round and pay for it as he hadn’t got his card on him! I still laugh about it today. The thought was there..

My favourite Valentines Day memory was when my other half decided to cook us a slap-up meal, he dropped mine onto the floor as he was carrying it to the dining table, tripped up, and then knocked the wine of the table too, the cat jumped up and landed in the Tiramisu! After cleaning everything up, we went to our local restaurant, and after hearing our dinner fiasco, they gave us a free meal with Champagne!

Aged about 15 coming downstairs to get ready for school, seeing a shadow through the glass in the front door and a pink envelope dropping on the mat, the delight to see my name on it – and excitement of looking out to see my then crush peddling like mad away from our house. Priceless first love.
